The sweat lodge is an adaptation of the sweat bath that could be found in many cultures of North and South America, Eastern and Western Europe, Asia, and Africa. Soul Purification, a Spiritual Cleansing, was the purpose of such a ceremony – Native American’s did this as a way of finding their way back to the traditional ways of living. It was done to repair damage done to the mind, body, and spirit.
Sweats typically start off with a day fast while avoiding unhealthy substances; caffeine, alcohol, drugs, etc. Prior to entering the sweat lodge it is custom in many practices to smudge yourself with sage, cedar or sweet grass smoke as a means toward ritual cleanliness – not unlike cleansing a house – our body is our temple, etc.
Once you have entered a sweat lodge you crawl in a clockwise direction, bowing in humility to Great Spirit and in close contact with Earth Mother, and take your place in the circle, sitting cross-legged upright against the wall of the lodge.
When all attendees have taken their place the leader signals the doorkeeper to drop the flap covering the lodge opening. Darkness falls within the lodge and at this juncture the leader announces that all who cannot endure our free to leave at any time. In native culture you were given a phrase to speak and once spoken other participants will move away from the wall so that you may pass behind them in a clockwise direction.
You usually sit in a contemplative silence – the leader will call for the hot stones from the sacred fire to be brought in.
The stones are placed in a ceremonial order; west, north, east, south, center – then outward points. Once the stones are in position, the a water drum will sound and calls forth the spirit guides in prayer from the four directions. Water is then poured on each stone. The stones immediately release steam and a lot of it.
The ceremony has begun… The leader will usually begin reciting a prayer. songs, and chants.
During this purification process all sense of race, color, religion, etc. are set aside for a moment of unity of clearness and oneness. Each one of the attendees has the ability to sit with source. Healing begins for physical, emotional, spiritual and directional support.
A sweat is typically four rounds — each lasting about 30-45 minutes. The round ends when the leader announces the opening of the door.
Each round holds a specific desired intention.
Sweats are typically done before and after major rituals like the “Vision Quest”. The lodge symbolizes returning to the womb and the innocence of childhood – it’s dark, moist, hot, and safe. The darkness relates to the human ignorance before corrupted by so much of the physical and EGO.
James Ray’s, “Spiritual Warrior Retreat”, intended to replicate such an experience for the attendees. However, this resulted in 3 dead and dozens hospitalized and millions of people asking — “Why?”
It is important to note that at times like this we find ourselves pointing fingers and looking for someone to blame.
Let us not forget, as difficult as this may be, that nobody dies prematurely but rather at the exact moment in the precise way they intended to. Our human mind cannot understand and interpret the Divine reasoning behind this – in fact, it’s not our place to, rather it’s the person who is making the journey home.
Let us remember, that these people sought a profound spiritual experience and perhaps they found it. We do not know what their experience was nor could we begin to assume – perhaps, what they found led them to a Spiritual Liberation of sorts – freedom from the physical.
Many seem to be focusing on the $9,000 – $10,000 sticker price for such an event boasting that James Ray was in it for the money. While the sticker price does seem a bit high we must remind ourselves that the attendees willingly paid for and attributed their experience to be worth at least that much. This without a doubt was a valuable experience to which they would pay an exorbitant amount of money during such an economical time of hardship. There were people at this event from all walks of life and we cannot assume that only the wealthy went – some, saved to have such an experience.
Our human ways seek fault – fingers point to James Ray and his staff. I believe that if it were a common person attempting this they would undoubtedly be charged with 3 counts of murder or at the very least accidental manslaughter. I believe, James Ray, will be charged for his involvement (or lack there of).
I believe that such arduous spiritual journeys should not be taught by someone who teaches people how to find wealth through the Law of Attraction. I believe that such spiritual journeys should be taught by the adept and schooled in these ways. I also believe that at this sticker price a sound medical staff should be present – doctors, nurses, nutritionist, etc.
I believe that those entering into this should have consulted with their personal physician as well for guidance.
James Ray attempted something with I believe the best of intentions for those who attended but lacked the skill and knowledge to run such a retreat. Many things can happen when one is on a vision quest – astral projection being one and can be dangerous if one does not know what they are doing. There is no way of knowing what type of experience one is having when they are having it just by observing.
Those attending the event were seeking an ultimate spiritual experience … 3 achieved such an experience – a re-emergence with Source and came into the full of their Divine Spiritual Beings.
My advice to those wanting to attend such an event in the future – know the risks, go with someone who knows what they are doing (granted many who attended assumed James Ray did), and don’t allow yourself to be put in unsafe situations.
Sweat Lodges have helped people through addictions and are powerful methods of doing so, but need to be facilitated by someone with proper credentials.
I have no doubt that if Oprah was to offer a Sweat Lodge – millions would come and some might die because Oprah isn’t knowledgeable in such areas.
At some point, people need to take responsibility for their own choices and actions as well…focusing less on pointing the fingers. When someone becomes a celebrity or social figure we cannot follow them blindly … we must keep our own spiritual wits about us.
I can say this about those that died at the Spiritual Warrior Retreat – they died like a Warrior for something they believed in. Many may not understand their belief or trust in such a man, but that is not for us to judge – only understand that they did BELIEVE and CHOSE to have this experience on more than one level.
They are now in the Ultimate of Spiritual Awakenings – may they enjoy it!
Love and Light to You All…
